| Born in 1953 in Hong Kong of Chinese and
Portuguese descent, John Rocha came to London in the late Seventies to
study fashion. The Irish linen he used in his graduate collection inspired
him to visit Dublin, where he has lived for the past 18 years with his
wife and business partner Odette and two children. These mixed origins are
central to Rocha’s designs for which he combines Chinese and Celtic
tradititions with an innovative and rich use of textiles to form strong,
simple, elegant shapes.
In 1993, Rocha was named British Designer of the Year and, in 1995,
after securing new financial backing from a major commodities company, he
opened his contemporary showroom in Temple Bar, Dublin. In 1996, he
unveiled his first John Rocha Jeans collection designed to attract a
younger market, and signed a distribution agreement with Itochu and
Orizzonti in Japan for the John Rocha mainline and jeans collection. His
latest venture is a partnership with the glass house Waterford Crystal,
for whom he has introduced a contemporary collection of tabletop crystal
called John Rocha for Waterford Crystal. The collection was launched
world-wide in 1997. |
