Hello Friends!
As usual, with all the updating, there's been lots of new soundbites added to the Jukebox at http://www.artist-shop.com/jukebox so be sure to check it out.
As fall approaches, it's time to get back to doing IRC Chats http://www.artist-shop.com/irc. James La Brie, vocalist for Dream Theater and his recent solo project, Mullmuzzler, will be joining The Artist Shop and Talk City on Wednesday, September 8 at 9pm eastern/6pm pacific. Inspired by his father, James started singing and playing drums at age 5. By the age of ten, he was performing in a barber shop quartet with his father, uncle and brother. Yet James' real love was rock music which he pursued by his early teens. At age 21, he began vocal training with the renowned vocal coach Rosemary Patricia Burns. After working with several Canadian bands, James became the vocalist for Winter Rose, which almost signed with Atlantic Records. Then Pierre Paradis, who managed the band Voi Vod, approached James regarding a solo project with Aquarius Records. He also told James about a New York based band called Dream Theater who were looking for a vocalist. The rest, as they say, is history.
James will join us to discuss his latest project, Mullmuzzler, slated to be released on Magna Carta http://www.artist-shop.com/magna in late August. With the help of the venerable Terry Brown, producer of Rush's output during the '70's, James built, shaped, then fine-tuned nine distinct, heartfelt and often bombastic tracks, all of them co-writes with an army of the field's hottest creators including members of Shadow Gallery, Matt Guillory of Dali's Dilemma, and Trent Gardner from Magellan and Exploreres Club. So the writers planted the seed and the players made it grow. Towards that end, Jame tapped co-writer and keyboardist Matt Guillory, scary Zappa-orbiting guitarist Mike Keneally and his gravity-defying bassist from Beer for Dolphins, Bryan Beller, plus Mike Mangini (best known for his work with Extreme and Steve Vai) for a little musical witchery down in LA. The result is a banquet of purifying rock, some of it slamming in a Zeppelin frame of mind, some of it reminiscent of Queen and possibly Styx, some of it simply the most elegant classic rock you will ever hear. And, hopefully, James will also share with us the progress being made on the forthcoming Dream Theater album!
Great news from Camel Productions http://www.artist-shop.com/camel!!! 'RAJAZ,' Camel's 1999 album, is now being mixed and is in the final stages of production. Accompanying Andrew Latimer are Dave Stewart (drums) and Colin Bass (bass guitar). 'RAJAZ' will be released on 7th October 1999. Also, the wonders of technology have brought about a reunion never thought possible due to the distance twixt the two musicians... keyboardist Ton Scherpenzeel from Kayak has returned to Camel making a guest appearance on several tracks! Many fans will remember Ton from his previous appearances with Camel both on "Stationary Traveller" and on the 1984 video "Pressure Points." A home-loving man, Ton is not comfortable away from his family and is less comfortable with air travel. Until now, these things made it impossible for Ton to appear on Camel albums. Technology has ended this isolation. Andrew sent the relevant tracks to Ton on CD-ROM and Ton was able to record his keyboard parts in his own studio in Holland. The two musicians were thrilled to be able to exchange ideas via their computers, downloading musical input within minutes. So energized by this opportunity, the two plan future projects together.
On our Mike Keneally/Immune page http://www.artist-shop.com/immune we have a forthcoming release from Mike Keneally!!! Mike's seventh album, Nonkertompf, is an instrumental effort featuring Keneally playing everything, including guitars, keyboards, drums, sax, a stool and about a dozen other devices. It's a 74-minute stream-of-consciousness flight-of-fancy that takes the listener on an unparallelled sonic journey. Countless styles and moods are explored and seamlessly sewn together, always with extraordinary musical precision, rich orchestrational sense and a very big heart. After two successful U.S tours of his own in 1998, Keneally is set to embark on a worldwide tour with Steve Vai, during which he'll be aggressively promoting Nonkertompf on each stop of the journey. Nonkertompf is Mike's very first release on his own brand new label, Exowax!
On our Medium Productions page http://www.artist-shop.com/medium we have three new albums on the way! Jansen, Barbieri and Karn/Ism - Ism transpired from a major label signing (Polydor Japan ) and was released in Japan in the early part of '99. Medium was then able to licence the album in territories outside of Japan, (excluding the UK). Ism is the first complete album in which Jansen, Barbieri and Karn have written and recorded as a three piece and in its uniqueness fully envelopes the trios distinctive musical styles.
JBK: We sometimes feel that the process of recording can become too habitual, particularly when collaborating within the familiar surrounds of an enduring friendship. Were at a point where we seek out the accidents when structuring a piece of music - singular moments that lead a composition away from the familiar and alludes to something much more unforeseen - a way of stepping outside of our own trappings to reveal hidden dimensions that may even surprise ourselves.
Jansen, Takahashi/Pulse Remix - Remixes of titles from the original pulse recording featuring remixes by 4 Hero, Spacer, DJ Spooky, Reflection, Fantastic Plastic Machine, and Steve Jansen. The Medium release differs from the Japanese version in that the Eric Kupper Remix of 'Prayer of Gold' has been replaced by a new version by Steve Jansen, and the Reflection 'Confused Bits' have not been included.
Various Artists/The Medium Sampler - Not familiar with the Medium catalog, but curious enough to want to try it out? Well here's where to start! The Medium Sampler contains a track from every title from the Medium catalog (except Seed) and at an especially low price that can't be beat for a full length import CD! And for those completists who already have everything in the Medium catalog, Medium has included a bonus 'incentive' track which is a live recording of 'Life Without Buildings' taken from the Astoria II concert in London '97 that is previously unreleased and features the talents of Steve Wilson and Theo Travis.
Coming mid September from DGM http://www.artist-shop.com/discipln is John Paul Jones/Zooma! This roaring and powerful 9 track instrumental album features Jones playing four-string, ten-string, and twelve-string basses, as well as bass lap steel, kyma, mandola, organ and guitars, while also arranging and conducting members of the London Symphony Orchestra for one of the tracks. John Paul Jones envisions Zooma as the advent of an on-going solo career. He is keen to return to touring, and a planned world tour will begin with major cities in the US in the fall. (Hmmmm, do you think Robert Fripp came up with that title ;-)
And not on DGM, but worthy of mention on that page is the following tidbit from our import preorder section:
KING CRIMSON-IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING (LIMITED) $21.95
Special limited 30th anniversary edition of the legendary English prog rock group's
phenomenal 1969 debut album in deluxe packaging. Digitally remastered using 24 bit
technology, it comes in a miniaturized LP sleeve with the original artwork & sleeve
notes intact, plus some previously unpublished photos. Five tracks, including '21st
Century Schizoid Man' and 'In The Court Of The Crimson King'.
On our Cellsum page http://www.artist-shop.com/cellsum we have a forthcoming release from The Brain Surgeons called Piece of Work! Hallelujah! the Brain Surgeons have finally finished the making of the epic double CD, Piece of Work, their fifth (and sixth!) album. If it's taken them twice as long, it's not just because it's twice as much music. They wanted to ensure that this piece is their best work ever -- reflecting the personal upheavals and experiences of the individual members of the band while trying to maintain the characteristic sense of humor you have come to know and love so well!
Newly released on Cellsum is the film soundtrack, Burnzy's Last Call. Eppies, a downtown Manhattan joint with a quirky clientele, understanding bartender and a very unusual jukebox, is the setting for "Burnzy's Last Call," the award winning independent feature from Rockville Pictures and director Michael de Avila. Eppies regulars like Andre the art forger (David Johansen), Kevin the Wall Street barracuda (Chris Noth) and Gertrude the Eurotrash tourist (Frederique van der Wall) are tuned to a common frequency that alternately evokes the most glorious, glamiest and greasiest moments in pop history. This album is produced by Crispin Cioe, a regular Brain Surgeons collaborator, and features such legendary artists as Nik Gentry, Little John Nancy, Nancy John, Wally & the Wankers, Duke Duckworth & the Mallards, Frankie Modesto and more (who sound suspiciously like The Smithereens, David Johansen, Deborah Harry, Graham Parker, Crispin Cioe, Lou Christie and more, but from some strange parallel dimension!).
Let's talk about recent releases starting with the One King Poets album, Major Wood, to be found on our Gramophone Page http://www.artist-shop.com/gramophone. Much has been written recently about Miles' electric period, Agharia, Get Up With It, ect., but none of the gathering enthusiasm has so far produced any muisc which approaches the power and sheer joy of those records. Most attempts have concentrated on the dissonance and volume while neglecting the other vital element - a massive, hip-rolling groove! A small experimental music club in London was therefore a most surprising place to discover a re-affirmation of the music. To some extent it was probably as much a shock for the performers. One King Poets have been together as a trio of Mike Walter (saxophones and organs), Robin Musgrove (drums) and Jerry Bird (electric bass) for several years. They mainly played the free improvising circuit - despite the fact that they don't improvise, instead inviting special guests to improvise over their pre-arranged pieces. These guests have come from areas as diverse as Afro-Pop and experimental electronic music, with results that were, to say the least, variable. However, when they invited Echo City members Giles Perring (electric guitar) and Paul Shearsmith (trumpet/trombone), they were cooking from the outset!
We have a lot of new releases from the ESD/Northside/Omnium group of labels http://www.artist-shop.com/esd starting with Henry Cow/Unrest (Remastered) A newly-remastered edition of the second Henry Cow album from 1972. 8 page full color booklet includes rare photos and additional notes.
Sorten Muld/Mark II - Sorten Muld blow the dust off centuries of Danish music, and transform it into something very contemporary, modern, and exciting. The 3 core musicians take Nordic folksongs hundreds of years old, and stage them as jungle, trip-hop, and techno tracks. Seeking something profound and intense, the Danish singer Ulla Bendixen, musician-architect Martin Ottosen and techinician Henrik Munch began digging deep into the Nordic ballad tradition to till its fertile soil. What they found they took to the studio, combining traditional instruments such as hurdy-gurdy and bagpipes with samples, sequencers, and more. The sound that emerged has now been transformed into a shattering live experience as well. Its a surprisingly successful project which has taken both the critics and their local audience by storm: MARK II went gold in Denmark and won 2 Danish Grammy awards. Ulla Bendixens vocals, at times whispering, at times soaring, are at the center of the mix. The lyrics are in Danish English translations provided but the stories are so bloody and filled with superstition and magic, that the language becomes irrelevant and the experience hard to shake.
Bukkene Bruse/The Stone Chair - New Norwegian Music with Ancient Roots, featuring Annbjørg Lien, Bukkene Bruse (buh*kayna brew*sah) were appointed as official Olympic Musicians for the 1994 Winter Games at Lillehammer, Norway. Following an international tour, they took part in the closing ceremonies which were broadcast around the world. The Stone Chair is their third album of innovative arrangements, played on a mix of traditional and modern instruments. Their repertiore draws from many areas of Norway, combining regional traditions with a number of original compositions. "...the young singer Arve has a beautiful voice with a classical singing style. Combined with flute and keyboards, this style gives the songs their very own, special and magic feeling ...exactly the right thing to listen to at home on cold winter evenings." Folkworld (Germany)
Various Artists/Wizard Women of the North - This collection features some of the leading Nordic women who are taking the music of their foremothers and making it relevant to today. It begins with "kulning" -- the Nordic herding calls that pierce the air. As the journey unfolds the women's voices lead us through evocations of wind, water sprites, and rolling mists. The Nordic traditional music revival has at its forefront a number of talented female vocalists and instrumentalists.
Various Artists/Devil's Tune - Features Norways unique Hardanger fiddle, that has resonating strings and special tunings which give it a particularly haunting quality. There are many legends and stories about exhausted fiddlers who, after days of playing, have achieved a trance-like state of ecstasy. Here are some of the well-known fiddle tunes (handed down for hundreds of years) which have been inspired by such a state, The drone of the strings seems to wield a strange power that affects the listener even today. The collection includes melodies inspired by wood nymphs, mill sprites, and waterfall wizards, as well as three versions of "Fanitullen" (named for the devil himself).
Oysterband/Here I Stand - "...irrestistible fervor...natural, unforced, triumphant and positive."fRoots The British roots pioneers release a powerful new album, blending a diversity of sounds and subjects into a triumphant whole, full of songs with impossibly alluring choruses and beauteous melodies. Repeated listening required. Like all Oysterband music, this record is built on integrity, passion and human emotion, with songs that make you want to dance/scream/cry/jump for joy/(fill in the blank).
On our Thirsty Ear page http://www.artist-shop.com/thirsty we have a couple new reissues from Pere Ubu - Dub Housing and New Picnic Time. Released in their original state for the first time in the US since 1979. Hear them the way Pere Ubu recorded them. Dub Housing - originally released in 1978 on Chrysalis, this landmark LP inspired Melody Maker to describe Pere Ubu as "Stomping all over rock n' roll's accepted language and creating, with fire and discipline, one of their own." Dub Housing was Pere Ubu's first masterpiece. New Picnic Time - Originally released in 1979 (also on Chrysalis), New Picnic Time continued the band's challenging and astounding revelations. "...a drunken, wanton, willful sounding album....exhilarating, funny, somehow very vital music." -- Sounds
On our CMP Page http://www.artist-shop.com/cmp you'll now find Jack Bruce/The Jack Bruce Collection. This is a collection taken from Jack Bruce's work on the CMP label including tracks from his albums Monkjack, Somethin Els and Cities of the Heart, as well as collaborations found on Mark Nauseef's album, Wun Wun and the Nauseef/Tadic album, The Snake Music. There are also two previously unreleased tracks - Politician and Sitting on Top of the World.
You'll find two new releases on our Outer Music page http://www.artist-shop.com/outer. Goddess Trance/Electric Shiatsu - Gilli Smyth as "space whisper" poet and partner to Daevid Allen has been an original member and integral part of Gong since their formation in Paris in 1970. She has contributed vocals on over thirty Gong albums and has recorded and toured as Mother Gong producing a trilogy of "cosmic feminist tracks". The Goddess T. band comprises Gilli Smyth, Tone Orlando, Nick Spacetree with occasional guest Daevid Allen, they have been playing gigs and events around Byron Bay in Australia for the past three years. This album is a deep exploration of resonances and frequencies that reach into the body like sound acupuncture and stir buried emotions. Whilst the album has modern grooves (dub, dance, ambient) its aim is not to fit into one particular category, but to explore different sounds, rhythms and frequencies, that may well be extra-terrestrial.
Bondage Fruit/Selected - Hailing from Tokyo, Bondage Fruit represents an Asian interpretation of progressive music. Pounding out a hybrid of western avant-garde jazz and dissonant rock, their music reverberates with a uniquely Japanese approach to percussion and rhythm.
On our HTD page http://www.artist-shop.com/htd we have three new reissues from the band Magna Carta. Live at the Grassington - Reissue of the folky British prog rock veterans 1998 album, recorded directly onto digital at the U.K. Grassington Folk festival in 1998. Features the rare song 'Highway To Spain', which has been long deleted since its original release. State of the Art - Reissue of their 1994 album, recorded in Holland and originally only a very limited Spanish release. Contains many of their best recordings, including 'Lord Of The Ages' & 'Airport Songs'. Midnight Blue - Reissue of the folky British prog rock veterans 1982 album. It also includes the bonus track, Highway to Spain.
And speaking of reissues, we also have five new reissues on our Wounded Bird page http://www.artist-shop.com/wounded from The Siegel-Schwall Band! The titles include The Siegel-Schwall Band, Sleepy Hollow, 953 West, Live: The Last Summer, and R.I.P. Siegel-Schwall. Wounded Bird has reissued these classic albums by this folk-blues band fronted by Corky Siegel and Jim Schwall, remastered and featuring the original artwork. These albums were originally released on Wooden Nickel Records between 1971 and 1974. "For groups like the Rolling Stones ... names like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf were exotic inspirations. For Siegel-Schwall they were the guys that played with them on 43rd Street." - Lin Brehmer - WXRT radio.

Hello Friends!
As usual, with all the updating, there's been lots of new soundbites added to the Jukebox at http://www.artist-shop.com/jukebox so be sure to check it out.
I'm happy to introduce a number of artists and labels that are new to The Artist Shop. Let's start with Musea http://www.artist-shop.com/musea. Musea is a 10-year old non-profit record label located in France dedicated to the promotion of Progressive Rock. This style of music was made popular in the 70's by bands such as Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator, Magma, Ange, and many others. However, the rough rules of the market and the lack of media support led Progressive music to lose favor by the late 70's.
Despite this public desertion throughout the 80's and 90's, artists from around the whole world perpetuate this aesthetic. Opposed to rigid formulae, Progressive music mixes Rock with elements from other horizons such as classical music (Yes, Genesis, ELP), jazz (Soft Machine, Caravan), electronic music (Heldon, Tangerine Dream), world music (Peter Gabriel) and many more.
During these last two decades, many artists have released masterpieces of great interest; but due to media disinterest, these gems have not yet reached the music lover's ears. The realization of this problem led to the founding of Musea. For 10 years, a crew of volunteers has participated in this adventure with no other aim than that of sharing the huge pleasure they feel while listening to these unknown treasures. With its production of 250 records (original releases and reissues) , Musea offers any open-minded listener bored with commercial music imposed by a media ruled by money, a collection of gems that lead to new and exciting musical horizons.
On this page http://www.artist-shop.com/musea we list the entire Musea catlog and we have graphics and soundbites up for the following recent releases:
Various Artists/Baja Prog '98 - This recording was realized in March 1998 in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico. It was the second issue of this progressive rock festival, held in March because of the city's anniversary. This CD offers 75 minutes with six of the nine bands playing then. XII Alfonso (France) offers two delicate pieces (with female vocals), somewhere between Camel and Mike Oldfield, with a subtle celtic touch. Minimum Vital's both pieces, excerpts from the band's latest studio album, are different than the ones from its new "live" album. They are one more proof of the exceptional talent of these french musicians, mixing medieval french music, folk, and progressive elements.
Iluvator (US) plays an efficient neo-progressive rock, combining lyricism and energy, in Marillion's manner. Puppet Show (US) presents two orginal songs, somewhere between the early Genesis and Atomic Rooster, with a singer close to Roger Chapman (Family), full of power and ideas. Cast (Mexico), as usual, is a marvelous combination of pure emotion, musical virtuosity and melodic sense. And Equinox (Panama) mixes progressive inspiration with latin elements near Santana: a really interesting blend! An exceptional collection of modern progressive rock, as diverse and eclectic as inspired, with an excellent sound! Here is a good initiation to the 21st century progressive sound!
Morte Macabre/Symphonic Holocaust - This strange title hides musicians from two scandinavian progressive bands: Landberk and Anekdoten. They re-arranged together horror movies' musical themes ("Rosemary's Baby", "Beyond", "Cannibal holocaust"...), for mellotron, guitar, keyboards, bass and drums. The "dark feel" in this music perfectly corresponds to Landberk's and Anekdoten's sense of atmosphere and strangeitude. It never becomes another "prog' star session", it is a warmly played and romantically paced album which promises lasting appeal!
4/3 de Trio/Faiblesse - This surprising new french band will certainly be one of the musical revelations of 1999. With three potential guitarists 4/3 de Trio offers ambitious compositions, with provocative lyrics. Powerful and well structured, these pieces may be thought near King Crimson and Anglagard for the melodic work, the musical tension. But it also recalls Steve Vai or Joe Satriani for virtuosity. With interesting keyboard parts and a dynamic drummer, 4/3 de Trio happens to be more than a "guitar band", one of the most talented french acts of the moment!
Sebastian Hardie/Live in L. A. - Sebastian Hardie was one of the most talented australian bands of the seventies, and one of the rare progressive ones. With two albums, "Four moments" (1975) and "Windchase" (1976), he offered a symphonic rock near YES' spirit: musical emphasis, melodies, lyrical guitars and keyboards, vocals, positive lyrics..., which is still held in high esteem among progressive audiences throughout the world. This live album is an historical testimony: the band got together again in 1994 for the L.A. progfest, and here is their performance! Of course it's highly emotional, but also, from a musical point of view, very satisfying, including their best pieces. Not to be missed!
Osiris/Reflections - One more beautiful story linked with Musea: we re-released both albums by this band from Bahrein ("Osiris" and "Myths and Legends")...but there was a third one! Released between 1987 and 1989 in the band's home studio, it was only released as a tape, due to financial problems (...and the lack of pressing factories in Bahrein!). "Reflections", moreover, is certainly their best album! The musicians' technical skill has increased through the years, and has even become a real virtuosity for the guitarist and the two keyboardists. These seven refined, complex compositions can easily be compared to Camel, or sometimes Genesis, for their delicacy and sense of melody. The dominating instrumental sequences, the melodious solis, the softness of the sung parts, everything here is an artistic success, that deserved to be known!
Motoi Sakuraba/Force of Light - This album is made up of music that was composed for a game with a vast and sweeping story, and as such is almost a concept album in and of itself, consisting of a tonal poem on a grand scale. The Japanese release, entitled Shining Force, is more of a true soundtrack in that the first track consists of a medley of music from all the Shining Force games, sure to entertain the fans of the game. Howerver, this release has in its place a completlely new piece written especially to complete Motoi's concept for the album.
Finisterre/In Ogni Luogo - Finisterre is one of the most talented and innovative bands in rock music today. This italian band has soon realized three albums, among which is the famous "In limine." This new work is probably their best and most diverse so far. Their eclectic work on sounds and arrangements is full of surprises and maturity: flute, violin, sax, complete the bands instruments (kbds/gtrs/bass/drums) and splendid female vocals to create an incredible musical patchwork, progressive music undoubtedly but with jazzy or ethnic moments. Finisterre may be compared to Porcupine Tree or Ozric Tenacles for this search of modernity, with a lyrical basis near Camel. Definitely brilliant!
Jean-Pierre Alarcen/Tableau No. 2 - J.P. Alarcen is the former guitarist of Sandrose, and has produced two solo albums. This is the third one, initially allowed by Renaud's (the french singer) financial help, but never released... until today! This symphony in five movements for piano and keyboards (with additional percussion) reveals Alarcen's search for and creation of atmosphere. Like Vangelis or The Enid, he creates a music which is beautiful, strange and captivating, calm and serene. This symphony has superb orchestral movements and delicate lyricism, with influences of Mahler, Faure or Debussy... A superb impressionist work, a work of art!
It took me quite a while to put together this new Musea page and in that time they released a lot of other progressive titles. So you can expect to see this page updated pretty soon.
We have some new bands recently added to our New Artist section http://www.artist-shop.com/newart/index3.htm - Glass Hammer, Par Lindh Project, Quarkspace and a collection of artists on the Progday '95 live recording.
Glass Hammer, a modern-day progressive rock band based in Tennessee, officially began in 1992 when longtime friends Steve Babb and Fred Schendel began writing and recording the Tolkienesque concept album "Journey of the Dunadan". The real origins of the group, however, can be found as far back as the early days of the 80's. Steve and Fred had yet to meet at that time, but were busy writing and performing with two other friends who would later become members of Glass Hammer -- Walter Moore and David Carter.
Now, in 1999, Glass Hammer is back in the studio feverishly working on their next album. Fred says "the last album wasn't big enough for us" and promises a full choir, pipe organ, and orchestra on this release. Steve promises "this one will blow everyone away" and urges Glass Hammer fanatics to stick around. The best is yet to come!
Glass Hammer/On to Evermore - The fourth epic Glass Hammer release features Walter on lead vocals for the first time, with the rest of the band in their usual sweeping, grandiose best. Impeccable production, a highly narrative storyline, and incredibly tight musicianship and songwriting make this one of the best Glass Hammer releases yet. The seventeen-minute epic "Arianna" has to be heard to be believed.
Glass Hammer/Perelandra - Glass Hammer's second disc (based loosely on C.S. Lewis's Narnia and "fairy tales for adults" series) showed even more maturity, a cooler musical tone, and long sweeping instrumental sections. Progressive rock dealer The Laser's Edge raved, "A strong sense of melody is a Glass Hammer trademark and it's present here in spades...This is a virtual demo disc for your sound system...one of the best progressive rock albums ever. Alan Parsons should be jealous." The Spanish magazine Lunar Suite wrote that "Glass Hammer possesses the clarity and positiveness of Yes, and the majesty of ELP. In order to live out a thousand magical experiences put it in your player, press play and let your imagination do the rest!"
Glass Hammer/Journey of the Dunadan - (Now Back in Print!) The first release from Glass Hammer features an epic concept story based on Tolkien's Lord of the Rings stories, smooth production, impeccable musicianship and breathtaking solos. Harmony Magazine in France called it "...a melodic standard that is infallible, a masterpiece of technique that is amazing, a revolutionary approach...here it is ALL genius!"
The band Par Lindh Project was formed in the spring 1995 as a result of the cooperation between Jocke Ramsell, Nisse Bielfeld, Magdalena Hagberg and Pär Lindh during the 1994 sessions to record Gothic Impressions and the CD PFR by RFP = Ramsell for President. The band had been rehearsing and recording during autumn 1995. Besides recording the CD Rondo, which was their first effort to record as a band, Magdalena has been doing a wonderful job in recording the vocals for the Tolkien inspired CD BILBO. PLP´s first ever performance was at the Gothenburg Art-Rock Festival on the 4:th of May, 1996.
In 1991 Pär Lindh and friends started The Swedish Art Rock Society at the dawn of the renaissance for Swedish progressive rock. At the first Festival arranged by the society in autumn 1991 (where Pär gave a speech as well as a spectacular performance) all the three major progressive bands from Sweden showed up (Anekdoten, Änglagård and Landberk) some of them came to perform others just to attend the event. This Art-rock festival became somewhat of a startingpoint for a new wave of exiting music emerging from this little scandinavian country.
The first record to emerge from the Crimsonic Label is Par Lindh's innovative album "Gothic Impressions" which has influences from renaissence music, early baroque, Bach, postromanticism, aventgarde, impressionism and from the symphonic rock bands of the early seventies. The result is a unique new kind of music. On this CD you will find some of Swedens finest artrock musicians and poets today which ensures a very high performing quality. Pär Lindh is currently working on many future CD prodjects. Some of them in cooperation with the musicians found on the CD "Gothic Impressions". In 1995 the mini CD "Rondo" was released which was PLP´s first effort as a five member group. The song Rondo was recorded live in at Crimsonic in PLP´s second rehersal as a band! On 4th december 1997 PLP headlined the Rio de Janeiro Art Rock Festival and their new CD "Mundus Incompertus" released at the same time. At present PLP is invited to play concerts and headline festivals all over the world.
In 1996 the CD "Bilbo" was released inspired by J.R.R. Tolkiens first book "The Hobbit". Pär Lindh and Bjorn Johansson wrote and performed the music together. PLP sometimes play music from Bilbo at their concerts. Par Lindh is also heavily featured on Bjorn Johansson's album, Discus Ursi's.
Quarkspace was formed in 1984 and was originally called Quark! "Space" was added later to stave off any potential lawsuits by a certain software company. College classmates - Jay Swanson on keys, and Kevin Wherry on bass were joined by the brother of a classmate - Darren Gough (guitar). They proceeded to work on cover material, planning to play frat parties and local bars. Fledgling singer-songwriter Chet Santia soon joined along with Darren's classmate, Paul Williams on drums. Whilst slaving over cover tunes by Zappa, Camel, Neil Young, Talking Heads, etc., plus a few originals - a knack for communal space jams became apparent.
Paul and Chet both left in early 1986 to concentrate on school. The other members continued for about a year with another singer and a couple of drummers before Quark! went dormant for a period. In the interim, Jay released a couple of cassettes of homespun keyboard music. Paul played in a few bands (including the almost legendary New Druids) and released an ambient space solstice-music cassette that once was the first release from Eternity's Jest Records. Dave Wexler had spent several years writing songs and playing guitar in bands along the west coast before meeting Paul in 1991.
Quarkspace released its first CD in 1996 with Dave (and others) appearing as a guest. By the time spacefolds 2 was released, Dave became the newest member of the band. Since then quarkspace has done several successful live performances (including appearances at Strange Daze 97 & 98 with Hawkwind and some of the other best American spacerock bands, including Alien Planetscapes, Architectual Metaphor, F/i, Melting Euphoria, Pressurehed, ST37, Born to Go, etc). Their second CD, Live Orion, was recorded at the first Orion Spacerock festival. It was named the 3rd best Psychedelic/Spacerock Album of 1998 by the French-canadien Avant-garde radio show, Delire Musical. It also finished #53 on the Gagliarchives Top 100 Progressive albums of 1998.
Quarkspace have just released their latest CD, Spacefolds 5, the latest in the Spacefolds series and the first released on CD. This is not a mini-CD as the price might suggest, but over 70 minutes of extended space jams! ...an outer space rave leading to a journey across uncharted space towards ascension into the quark nebula... 100% certified raw improv...enjoy and beware...
National Steam is made up of Paul and Dave from quarkspace, plus special guests. They specialize in psychedelic progressive electronica with some kinda strange and crunchy exceptions. Mike Taylor of the Gilbraltar Electronic Magazine says Steam are "excellent.... kinda reminds me of Clearlight." J. J. Iglesias of the Spanish magazine Atropos loved the debut space cassette "SteamDream 1", comparing it to Steve Hillage/Tim Blake era Gong. John Patterson of Progression Magazine highly recommended the Steam debut CD, saying the boys "hit the cosmick nail square on its head!" J. D. Dallas of cringe.com wondered whether R2D2 made a guest appearance! Check 'em out!!!
Various Artists/Progday '95 - ProgDay '95 features music from the first edition of what has become the premier outdoor festival of international progressive rock. Held each year in Chapel Hill, NC, USA during late August / early September (Labor Day weekend), ProgDay is celebrating its fifth anniversary in 1999 (Labor Day weekend).
You can experience much of the magic of the first ProgDay with this 2-CD collection of highlights. It includes performances by Ozone Quartet (formerly Cloud Nine), Timothy Pure, Discipline, Bon Lozaga, and Echolyn. The Discipline material includes several tracks that are unavailable on either of their studio releases. Echolyn's stunning performance at ProgDay '95 was their last ever, and over 45 minutes of it is captured here.
This is an official release (not a bootleg), and was lovingly assembled with full involvement from the bands. The sound quality is superb, and the performances are outstanding. Each disc contains approximately 70 minutes of music.
Now let's talk about forthcoming releases. Cuneiform http://www.artist-shop.com/cuniform has five new releases slated for mid to late September!
Blast/A Sophisticated Face - Blast is a Dutch band notable for compositionally complex music and brutally powerful performances. Since forming in 1989, the band has worked to develop a sound both dense and kaleidoscopic. A Sophisticated Face, the band's fourth release, is an exciting sylistic departure; normally working as a quartet, for this release the band are essentially a miniature orchestra consisting of guitar, trumpet, flugelhorn, soprano, alto and baritone saxes, alto clarinet, violin, cello, cymbalom [an Eastern European hammered dulcimer], bass and percussion. The music reflects that as well, as the sound is geared more towards modern 20th century classical composition than what is normally thought of as "rock" music. "Suggestive of nothing, [Blast] harken back to the days when music adhered to no trend or scene...this is a must." [4 out of 5 stars] - Alternative Press.
Peter Frohmader, Richard Pinhas/Fossil Culture - Two giants of electronic rock music join forces on this compelling collaboration! Based in Munich Germany, Peter Frohmader has been an important fixture on the European electronic music/avant garde scene since the mid 1980's. He has released over 20 CDs & lps. Parisian Richard Pinhas is best known as the leader of Heldon. Between 1974-1978, Heldon released 7 highly praised and sought-after albums that fused electronics and rock music. Besides the Heldon works, Pinhas has recorded about a dozen additional solo works. Richard Pinhas has long been recognized as a pivotal figure in the development of electronic rock; "France's most influencial contemporary musician...[some of his] works also serve as links between the avant-garde and the industrial explosion to come. - Alternative Press.
The Hosemobile/What Can & Can't Go On - What Can & Can't Go On is the second album [their 1st for Cuneiform] for The Hosemobile, a band from rural Cookeville, TN., stuck right in the middle of the bible-belt with a sound all their own, as they mix late 1990's influences of postrock bands such as Don Caballero, Trans Am, Shellac and Slint with the progressive/experimental edge of Mahavishnu Orchestra, This Heat and others. The end result is a fusion of fiery agression with complex structures and intense layering of musical ideas performed on dual guitars [one of whom doubles on Fender Rhodes piano], bass and drums, with one track featuring voice as well. Recorded live in the studio, this is an impressive work from a young band of hard working "road-dogs" who tour constantly.
Univers Zero/The Hard Quest - Univers Zero's distinctive sound is a combination of their unique instrumentation (piano and keyboards, violin, clarinet and bass clarinet, basoon, oboe, bass and drums). blended with gothic imagery, and an intensely strong, classically influenced writing style. In the hands of some of the best musicians in Europe, these factors lead to a group on the cutting edge of creating a new, vital and different approach to rock music. This is the band's first release in 13 years (!) and even before its release is already gathering acclaim such as, "The fall of Rome? The parting of the Red Sea? What else can compare with the monumental occurence of a new slab of Univers Zero....the world's finest musical ensemble." - Exposé 18.
Von Zamla/1983 - Von Zamla were founded in 1981 by Grammy Award-winning keyboardist/composer Lars Hollmer and guitarist Eino Haapala, both former members of Sweden's Samlas Mammas Manna, one of the original five founding bands of the "Rock In Opposition" [R.I.O.] movement, and one of the most popular bands in Sweden during the 1970s. Von Zamla released two albums in their lifetime; Zamlaranama (1981) and No Make Up (1983), neither of which was released outside of Sweden. The band disbanded after a final tour in 1985. These previously unavailable, professionally recorded live tapes are from the band's European tour in Spring, 1983. In addition to the two co-leaders, the band features the work of Univers Zero member Michel Berckmans on oboe and bassoon, a second keyboardist, bass and drums. This album is the first time that any Samla/Zamla related works have been released in the USA.
Come towards the end of August from Magna Carta http://www.artist-shop.com/magna is Mullmuzzler/Keep It to Yourself. James LaBrie has seen stunning commercial and critical success throughout the '90's with his band, Dream Theater, that pantheon of progressive rock, this past decade. But gathering steam before the millenium, each and every member of the band has also been busy with side projects. But unlike his bandmates, LaBrie's record is a true solo offering (despite the playful band moniker), perhaps reflecting that special place we hold for both vocalists and lyricists, perhaps reflecting the highly personal place words hold within our heart. So, with the help of the venerable Terry Brown, producer of Rush's output during the '70's, James built, shaped, then fine-tuned nine distinct, heartfelt and often bombastic tracks, all of them co-writes with an army of the field's hottest creators including members of Shadow Gallery, Matt Guillory of Dali's Dilemma, and Trent Gardner from Magellan and Exploreres Club. So the writers planted the seed and the plaerys made it grow.
Coming in September are two reissues from One Way http://www.artist-shop.com/oneway that will have many of you dancing in the aisles - Happy the Man/Crafty Hands and Happy the Man/Happy the Man! Yes, these are the reissues you prog fans have been waiting for this for a long, long time!!! But the objective is finally in sight. The two Happy the Man albums originally released on Arista are finally getting a US CD release! And to top it off, these reissues have been remastered by Kit Watkins himself! For those of you with the misfortune to be unfamiliar with this band, many prog afficionados are of the opinion that Happy the Man was simply the finest progressive band to come out of North America!
And while we're discussing One Way, they've just put out some new reissues. Styx/Serpent is Rising; Man of Miracles - Styx were one of the biggest art-rock bands of the 70's, capable of producing monster hits along-side sprawling concept albums. With a tip of the hat to contemporaries such as ELP, King Crimson and The Moody Blues, these early albums show their developing style, featuring Dennis DeYoung's operatic vocals, trademark harmonies. It's easy to see why they have maintained a devoted fan base to this day.
Chamber Brothers/Now...Live! and Chamber Brothers/People Get Ready - A soulful blend of blues, gospel and folk music in a live setting, these albums predate the phenomenal success of their 1967 hit, Time Has Come Today, and give a prime example of what's missing in most R&B music of today, genuine raw Rhythm & Blues.
Beau Brummels/From the Vaults - Favoring original material over covers and just plain bad timing kept the Beau Brummels from being recognized as the true progenitors of both folk-rock and the San Francisco sound - a title more often given to the Byrds' Mr. Tambourine Man. From The Vaults presents rare and previously unreleased material from the group's mid 60's prime and aims to add to the complete picture of a group pioneering a truly America musical form.
Sheena Easton/Sheena Easton - One Way continues the Sheena Easton re-issues with her 1981 debut album containing the hits Morning Train (#1) and Modern Girl (#18) along with 5 bonus tracks.
We have a couple new releases from Adrian Belew Presents http://www.artist-shop.com/adrian. Adrian Belew/Coming Attractions - Apparently Adrian has been caught in some kind of time warp. Coming Attractions is his latest collection of greatest hits. However, this collection features tracks from various albums that have not yet been released! Projects in the works include Adrian's next solo album, a brand new Bears project, another in his series of acoustic albums, an archival collection of rarities, and the second in his experimental guitar series. All are represented here in a delightfully diverse collection! But beware, this will only make you hungry for the full length releases!
The Irresponsibles/When Pigs Fly - The Irresponsibles are a Boston based, hook laden, power pop band, reminiscent of 60's British rock, but with an updated sound of their own. Their live show is an eye and ear catching spectacle featuring a full string quartet and a psychedelic light show. They have been featured in Billboard, Musician Magazine and all the Boston fanzines. Shortly after winning Musician Magazine's best unsigned band in the country competition, the magazine contacted the band relating that one of the contest judges, guitarist/producer Adrian Belew, loved the band and wanted to talk to them. For the next year via mail, fax and phone, they stayed in contact with Adrian by sending demos, videos and cartoons until he had a stockpile of great songs from the band. Finally their collaboration has come to fruition in this new album produced by Adrian (with some guest appearances on Belewps and piano), When Pigs Fly.
On our Camino Records page http://www.artist-shop.com/camino you'll now find Ian McDonald/Drivers Eyes - This is the debut solo release from Ian McDonald, one of the founding members of King Crimson and the main composer for the incredible Crimson debut, In the Court of the Crimson King. Guests on this album include Steve Hackett, John Wetton, Lou Gramm, Gary Brooker, John Waite, Mike Giles, Peter Frampton, a co-write with Pete Sinfield (the first since King Crimson and McDonald & Giles days). According to Ian at least one track is purely a McDonald and Giles track.
Also available is Steve Hackett/The Tokyo Tapes. This double CD is not a new release, but has just received a US release after having been available only as an import for quite a while. Added to the US release of Tokyo Tapes are three video tracks taken from the Tokyo Tapes video - Watcher of the Skies, Heat of the Moment & Los Endos - plus background and bio information and some shots of tour posters/stage plan etc.
On our DGM page http://www.artist-shop.com/discipln you'll now find the Japanese release - King Crimson/The Collectors' King Crimson Volume One. For those of you who missed out on the first three DGM Collectors Club releases, here is your chance to rectify that error (albeit a more expensive chance than had you initially joined the Club)! This is a Japanese-only three CD collection of rare live shows previously only available through the DGM Collectors Club. Disc one, Live at the Marquee, contains tracks from two different shows in '69 featuring the original King Crimson (Robert Fripp, Ian McDonald, Michael Giles and Greg Lake), disc two, Live at Jacksonville, has material from a Jacksonville show in '72 (Fripp, Ian Wallace, Mel Collins and Boz Burrell) and disc three, The Beat Club, Bremen, features tracks from a German show in '72 (Fripp, Bill Bruford, Jamie Muir, John Wetton and David Cross). The three CD's are packaged in a slipcase which also includes two booklets of photos and copius text - one booklet in English and the other in Japanese.
We have two new releases on our HTD page http://www.artist-shop.com/htd.
Caravan/Surprise Supplies - features a previously unreleased concert recording of the band
from 1975 at which
time the band featured Pye Hastings (vocals, guitar), Geoff Richardson (viola), Jan
Schelhaas (keyboards), Mike Wedgewood (bass, vocals), and Richard Coughlan (drums). There
is also an uncredited flutist on this album who, very likely, is Jimmy Hastings. Songs
included are Here Am I, Chiefs and Indians, Can You Hear Me, All the Way (With John
Wayne's Single Handed Liberation of Paris), Very Smelly Grubby Little Oik, and Love in
Your Eye.
Derek Holt's After the Climax/I Love You - 1999 solo album from Climax Blues Band's vocalist. 16 tracks, including updated solo rendition of their hits 'Couldn't Get It Right' & 'I Love You', plus a piano version of 'I Love You'!
