About the University/College
Langara College (Langara) offers a broad selection of courses and programs
to serve the needs of individuals committed to pursuing postsecondary
study. Throughout its fall, spring and summer semesters the college enrols
approximately 15,000 students in its first- and second-year arts and science
courses and its 31 career programs. The college also serves about 8,400
continuing education students.
Langara offers university transfer programs in the arts and sciences,
and career programs; co-op opportunities are available in several programs.
The arts and sciences programs at Langara are designed to allow students
to earn transferable credit towards a university degree. A one-year engineering
transfer program is also offered that allows students to continue their
studies in UBC's Faculty of Engineering.
Career programs are designed in conjunction with community advisory committees
to ensure students are prepared for careers in the arts, business, industry
and community services.
Langara College's modern campus offers lecture theatres, multi-use classrooms,
study rooms, laboratories, technical-vocational workrooms, studios, and
athletics facilities.
Langara is located close to downtown Vancouver, in a residential area
well-served by public transportation. Vancouver was declared by the United

Asked Questions
Why do students choose to study at Langara College instead
of going directly into university?
At Langara tuition cost is less, the classes are small, and there
is a flexible admission policy. In addition, you may transfer directly
from Langara English for Academic Purposes to postsecondary courses, the
faculty consistently win national awards for their teaching, its
centrally located in the city of Vancouver (close to the University of
British Columbia and Simon Fraser University) and year-round study is
possible.
Are the credits I receive at Langara College transferable
to university?
Yes. Credits earned in most of Langara Colleges Arts and
Science courses are transferable to any university in the province of
British Columbia. The credits are also accepted by other Canadian universities
as well as other universities in the United States and United Kingdom,
but must be applied for.
What are the admission requirements?
A student must have completed 12 years of schooling. To enter directly
into postsecondary programs international students must submit proof of
English language proficiency consisting of one of the following: TOEFL
550, IELTS 6.5, LPI 4 or Grade 12 English in British Columbia. To enter
the Langara English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) program, international
students must have a TOEFL 450, IELTS 5 OR LET 1 or 2.
Are all of Langara College programs open to international
students?
No. Several of the career programs have restricted enrolment since
Canadian citizens are given first priority. There are usually positions
available in the business programs. All of the arts and science programs
geared for university transfer are open.
What is the tuition fee at Langara?
International students pay only for the courses they take. Each course
is 3 credits. The cost per credit is C$242. If a student took a full course
load (5 courses/15 credits) for one semester (4 months) the cost would
be C$3,630.
Does Langara College have scholarships?
Yes. Each semester Langara provides two C$500 scholarships to the international
students with the highest marks during each semester. There are no entrance
scholarships.
When should I apply?
Anytime. Arts and science courses start three times a year (September,
January, May).
Does Langara College have a student residence?
No. Langara is located in a quiet residential area with ample student
accommodation in peoples homes or in local apartment buildings.
Langara also has a homestay office that serves our own students plus other
institutions in the Vancouver area.
What services does Langara College offer to international
students?
Langara College has a full-time international student counsellor who
is very familiar with international student needs and is skilled in cross-cultural
counselling. The International Education Department offers a variety of
assistance, as does the regular Student Services Department. Special services
have been set up to assist students who require assistance with English
and mathematics.
What is the weather like in Vancouver?
The winters are the warmest in all of Canada and the summers are warm
and sunny. The climate is a moderate maritime climate. The only snow Vancouver
gets is in the mountains behind the city.
