About the University/College
Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design (Emily Carr) is an intimate,
progressive institute offering programs that lead to Bachelor of Fine
Arts (BFA), Bachelor of Media Arts (BMA) and Bachelor of Design (BDes)
degrees and four-year diplomas. Programs at Emily Carr begin with a Foundation
year, which provides students with a common knowledge and skill base.
This general training is followed by three years of specialized study
in the School of Design, the School of Media Arts or the School of Visual
Arts. Emily Carr students are encouraged to take creative risks, to experiment
with ideas and materials, and to engage themselves in contemporary art,
media and design issues. Courses in critical studies encourage students
to formulate an informed perspective on their professional practice. Critical
Studies courses are offered in the history and theory of art, media or
design; cultural studies; humanities; social sciences; and sciences. Emily
Carr has exchange agreements with 25 art and design schools in North America,
Europe and Australia. The institute also offers internships, co-ops, and
directed studies on a limited basis.
Emily Carr is located in two modern buildings. The campus of Emily Carr
is situated on popular Granville Island in the False Creek harbour, in
view of the Northshore mountains and the downtown skyline. Granville Island
is home to a bustling market, and a variety of restaurants and theatres
Vancouver is the unofficial capital of western Canada, and offers a cosmopolitan
mix of recreational and cultural activities.

Asked Questions
Admission Deadlines?
Apply by October 15 for January admission (part-time study only). Apply
by March 1 for September admission to a full-time program. If you are
an international applicant for September, you can submit your application
and portfolio as early as the proceeding November 1 and receive an early
admissions decision (normally by January 31).
Documents? What accompanies the application?
You must submit a C$30 application fee, official transcripts for all secondary
and postsecondary schools that you have attended and a 250-word essay
describing your employment and educational history as it relates to your
interest in art, media, and/or design. The portfolio must be submitted
no later than the portfolio deadline date indicated on the application
form.
Degrees offered?
Emily Carr offers the following degree programs: Bachelor of Fine Arts
(Major in Visual Arts); Bachelor of Media Arts (Majors in Animation, Integrated
Media, Photography); and Bachelor of Design (Communications Design, Industrial
Design).
Part-time or full-time programs?
The only degree program available by part-time study is the general fine
art major. All other programs are taken by full-time study, normally requiring
15-18 hours per week of class time and 30-36 hours of study and practise
outside of the class time.
Housing?
There are no student residences on campus; students live off campus. Student
Services assists new international students find affordable housing which
is often shared with other students. Email contact for housing assistance

Working on campus?
You are not permitted to work off campus while on a student visa or student
authorization in Canada. If you are traveling to Canada to study, you
must ensure that you have proof of sufficient funds to support yourself
while studying in Canada.
Facilities?
Emily Carr Institute is located in two large architecturally designed
buildings which hold large, light-filled painting studios, a new library,
computer labs, large photography labs, printmaking studios, a ceramics
studio, indoor and outdoor sculpture areas, wood shops, design studios,
and galleries.
Tuition and costs?
The maximum tuition charged to a full-time international student is C$9,222.
You should anticipate spending another C$2,000 on supplies and materials.
Scholarships?
Once you have completed one term of study at Emily Carr, you are eligible
to compete for the scholarships that are available. The scholarship program
is administered by the financial aid officer in the Student Services office.
