Frequently
Asked Questions
Why go to college instead of university?
Students decide to attend college for a variety of reasons, depending
upon their needs. Colleges offer both university transfer programs and
career programs for entry into specific job fields: at Douglas College
approximately one third of full time students attend career programs.
Tuition fees at Douglas College are almost 50 percent lower than a university.
For university transfer students, college offers an easier transition
into post-secondary studies; classes sixes (maximum 35 students in most
courses) are much smaller than first- and second-year university, providing
the opportunity for more individualized instruction. Douglas College offers
a wide range of services, such as peer tutoring and counseling, to help
students successfully reach their educational goals.
What is the quality of instruction at Douglas College
compared to university?
In many cases, our students report instruction is better at college
than at university. The quality of teaching is excellent, smaller class
sizes permit more one-on-one instructional support, and college faculty
can focus on instruction, not research, as is the case at university.
How easy is it to transfer courses completed in college
towards degrees/credentials at university or other institutions?
Students in British Columbia benefit from one of the best academic
transfer systems in North America. Colleges, universities and other institutions
work hard at maintaining and upgrading transfer agreements, providing
students with greater academic mobility. Students should consult with
an academic advisor before entering a new program to learn about the transferability
of its courses.
