MP3
players are popping up all the time now. MP3 player used to be as scarce
as an honest politician, but with the .mp3 format growing at an explosive
rate, there are dozens of high quality mp3 players available. The current
most popular is the WinAmp mp3 player. The thing we find most interesting
about mp3 player programs in general, is there cool unique interfaces -
we hope this type of programming creativity catches on in other applications
that has driven the mp3 programming community.

is an extensible, freeware, open-source, cross-platform audio player.
It features an optimized version of the GPLed Xing MPEG decoder which
makes it one of the fastest and best sounding players available. Just
for grins, I fired it up on the 3rd box (a 486/133) and FreeAmp played
flawlessly - something WinAmp and most other players won't do. |

is a new Mp3 player by Matthew Woodhams with a pretty cool look and
feel. Sports skins and a solid decoding engine. Even though its beta,
I couldn't crash it while putting it through its paces (very solid).
Modest cpu usage that I couldn't get to skip. A good ID3 tagger and
play list. Has a cd player, and also plays midi's and waves of course.

decoder. A nice search-function that searches an entire drive or directory.
Playlist-builder. A different-looking GUI made without all the usual
BMP-stuff. Just ordinary components. Seek possibility, EQ, ID3 tag
editor, Play URL . |

Blue Labelle has the market cornered on Karaoke and MP3. One of the
few mp3 players that support Karaoke. Although a bit cpu intensive,
it isn't completely overpowering on slower systems (166recomended.)

SCMPX has a builtin encoder. Plays on as little as a 486-133. Does
a suprising job of re-sampling WAV -> WAV, in both stand alone
and batch mode. The double size mode is a bit chunky (jaggies) looking
but not to bad. Has a bar mode (winshade). The convertor is pretty
good - not to many players will work in a batch mode like SCMPX does.
Good cpu utilization and only takes a little over a meg of ram to
run. |
